How to Bake the Best Peanut Butter Cookies

Peanut butter, which had been invented in the late 1800s, quickly became a popular ingredient in American households and was commonly used in a variety of recipes.

One of the earliest recorded peanut butter cookie recipes was published in a cookbook by George Washington Carver in 1916. Carver was a prominent African American scientist and inventor who promoted the use of peanuts and other crops as alternative sources of food and income for farmers in the South.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, cream together the peanut butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  3. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between each cookie.

  4. Use a fork to press down on each cookie ball, creating a criss-cross pattern on top.

  5. Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly golden brown around the edges.

  6. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
